Louisiana created the 5 for 6 Scholarship to help you get the skills you need to upgrade your career. With the scholarship, we’ll pay the tuition and fees for the first six credit hours of your education program.
The 5 for 6 Scholarship covers tuition and fee charges for six credit hours of qualified coursework at community colleges in Louisiana. The scholarship serves students currently enrolled in adult basic education programs.
The Louisiana Community and Technical College System started the statewide scholarship to build the bridge between completing an adult education program and completing the first six credit hours of community college to qualify for Ability-to-Benefit funding.
To qualify for the 5 for 6 Scholarship, you:
- Must not have a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma
- Have not yet earned an ATB score on the Accuplacer exam
- Must apply for admission to the Northwest Louisiana Technical College campus
- Must be currently enrolled and remain enrolled in a WorkReady U program or any other adult basic education program
- Must be willing to be enrolled concurrently into a WorkReady U program and a technical program
The 5 for 6 Scholarship builds the bridge by providing funding for students transitioning from an adult education program to the first six credit hours of postsecondary education at a community college.
Louisiana residents who finish an adult basic education program, like WorkReady U, often require need-based financial aid for community college. Currently, individuals without a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma are ineligible for federal financial aid unless it’s obtained through federal ATB provisions.
Students without a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma can get financial aid through ATB if they’re enrolled in adult basic education. Also, they must either pass an approved ATB test or complete at least six credit hours or 225 clock hours that apply to a degree or certificate.
Because of the scholarship, community colleges are helping students obtain high school credentials, advancing them to credit-bearing postsecondary coursework, and giving them the chance to earn degrees and the potential to take on lucrative careers.
