Minden, LA — This summer, the Northwest Louisiana Technical Community College (NLTCC) proudly hosted its third annual Manufacturing Camp for junior high and high school students, partnering with Nuts, Bolts, and Thingamajigs to deliver a hands-on educational experience.
Over the two sessions held July 14-17 and July 21-24, campers explored the exciting world of manufacturing through interactive projects focused on safety, tools, and industry skills. The camp was led by Amanda McLemore, Director of Dual Enrollment, with hands-on teaching and guidance provided by NLTCC instructors. Students gained valuable knowledge in areas such as instrumentation, welding, industrial maintenance, and even participated in virtual field trips.
The camp culminated in a final project where students designed and built their own fishing poles using industrial tools and manufacturing techniques learned throughout the week. They then put their creations to the test by fishing in a stocked swimming pool constructed right on campus.
“A week like this gives students a real sense of what manufacturing is all about and shows them how the skills they learn can turn into something they’re proud of,” said Heath Holley, Dean of Manufacturing Technology, whose support was vital in making this camp possible.
NLTCC’s Manufacturing Camp remains an excellent introduction for young people interested in pursuing careers in high-demand technical fields. Dates for next summer’s camp will be announced early next year.
