Northwest Louisiana Technical Community College (NLTCC) is leaving a positive mark on the Shreveport community through its recent partnership with the Shreveport Police and Fire Departments. This collaboration, which began in October 2023, has created an exciting opportunity for Automotive Technology students at NLTCC to gain hands-on experience by working on police and fire department vehicles.
The program allows students to intern with experienced auto technicians at the Shreveport Police and Fire Departments. This real-world experience takes place during the last six months of their studies, offering invaluable training and skills that will ease their transition into the workforce.
The first students to join the internship, Kevin Barrera and Toby Conly, have been doing well and enjoying their time in the program. Kevin, who is from Honduras, recently began his internship with the police department. Reflecting on his experience, he shared, "Some new things that I have learned is that we all must work hard to earn trust and to have better chances in life. I am hoping to be able to stay on with the police department."
Toby Conly, a local from Shreveport, has been a part of the police department since December. Recently, Toby was offered a full-time position with the Police department upon graduation. In the future, Toby looks forward to, "Having the best benefits and retirement that you can get.”
Trimel Williams, Assistant Superintendent of Vehicle Maintenance for the Shreveport Police Department, only had great things to say about the internship so far. "Our first interns, Toby Conly and Kevin Barrera, are great students who seek knowledge and experience in the Automotive field. They have a great attitude, personality, and work ethic. We service over 500 units. Working with our fleet will give them a great experience in the real world. This program has been and will be a great success with many more years to come."
The opportunity to participate in internships is a valuable addition to NLTCC's Automotive Technology program. Also included in the program are specialized classroom instruction and practical shop experience, which prepares students for entry-level service and maintenance roles in the automotive industry. The program covers the safe use and maintenance of tools and equipment, as well as instruction in diagnosing and repairing engines, fuel systems, drive trains, electrical systems, brake systems, and suspension systems.
