The Northwest Louisiana Technical Community College’s (NLTCC) Shreveport campus is celebrating 90 years of educational excellence, reflecting nearly a century of growth, innovation, and service to the people of northwest Louisiana.
The college campus traces its roots to July 9, 1936, when it was established as the Shreveport Trade School — Louisiana's second technical school. Training initially focused on three programs: woodworking, electricity, and machine shop. The institution graduated its first class of 90 students in 1938, with 8 students receiving diplomas and 82 earning certificates for completing short courses through the trade extension evening classes. The school relocated to its current North Market Street campus in 1966 and expanded its facilities, programs, and service area over the following decades. As the needs of Louisiana's workforce and communities evolved, so did the institution.

Throughout the years, the college established additional campuses to serve communities across the region, including Minden and Mansfield. In 2027, the Minden and Mansfield campuses will celebrate their 75th and 50th anniversaries, respectively.
In 2019, the college officially became Northwest Louisiana Technical Community College. Today, NLTCC offers associate degrees, technical diplomas, certificates, adult education, dual enrollment opportunities, and workforce training through its campuses in Minden, Shreveport, and Mansfield.
Accreditation has been an important part of the college's history. NLTCC has maintained accreditation through the Council on Occupational Education since 1975 and, in June 2026, was granted accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), further reinforcing its commitment to educational excellence and student success.
"Ninety years ago, our institution opened its doors with just three training programs and a mission to create opportunities through education," said Dr. Jayda Spillers, Chancellor of NLTCC. "Today, that same mission continues through our campuses in Minden, Shreveport, and Mansfield. While our programs, facilities, and reach have grown tremendously over the past nine decades, our commitment to student success and community impact remains the same."

As NLTCC celebrates its 90th anniversary, the college recognizes the generations of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners who have contributed to its success. From its beginnings as a small trade school in 1936 to its role today as an accredited community college with three campuses, NLTCC remains committed to providing accessible, high-quality education that transforms lives and strengthens communities across northwest Louisiana. Plans for a commemorative anniversary celebration will be announced at a later date.
