On April 27th, North Louisiana Technical Community College (NLTCC) held its Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Spring 2023 induction ceremony, where 40 new members were initiated into PTK. Students from all three NLTCC campuses, located in Mansfield, Shreveport, and Minden, participated in the ceremony.
The ceremony was opened by Chancellor Spillers, followed by PTK advisor Debbie Washington, who introduced the honor society. The history of PTK was also shared, followed by a student speaker who talked about their experiences as a member of PTK. The conclusion of the ceremony involved the lighting of a candle for each student and the pledge, in which all new members committed to upholding the principles of PTK.
The guest speaker for the ceremony was Bossier attorney Ryan Gatti, who shared an inspiring message on leadership. He encouraged the new members to pursue their goals and to use their skills and ambition to make a positive impact in their communities.
Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society was established by Missouri two-year college presidents in 1918. Its purpose is to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and provide opportunities for individual growth and development through honors, leadership, and service programming. Today, Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education, with more than 2 million members and 1,200 chapters located in 50 United States, U.S. territories, Canada, and Germany. In 1929, the American Association of Community Colleges recognized Phi Theta Kappa as the official honor society for two-year colleges.
