Northwest Louisiana Technical Community College celebrated the 90th anniversary of its Shreveport Campus on Friday, August 21, recognizing nine decades of technical education, workforce development, and service to Northwest Louisiana while looking ahead to the college’s next chapter.
Faculty, staff, alumni, elected officials, community partners, and friends of the college gathered to commemorate the milestone and reflect on the institution’s growth from the Shreveport Trade School, established in 1936, to the comprehensive technical community college it is today.
The celebration also included recognition from state and local leaders. The Louisiana Senate adopted a resolution commending NLTCC on 90 years of educational excellence, workforce development, and service to Northwest Louisiana. The Caddo Parish Commission also presented a proclamation recognizing the college’s present and former administrators, including Chancellor Dr. Jayda Spillers, as well as faculty, staff, students, alumni, governing leaders, and supporters who have helped build NLTCC’s legacy.
During the celebration, NLTCC Chancellor Dr. Jayda Spillers announced a $30 million campus improvement project that will transform the Shreveport Campus and position it for continued growth. The announcement marks the next phase of Rebuild to Rise, an initiative centered on the college’s continued role as a beacon of opportunity for individuals seeking a better life and a stronger future.
The vision includes a complete revitalization of the campus through the resurfacing and modernization of building façades to create a welcoming environment that reflects the excellence taking place inside the college each day. Plans also include a new Allied Health and Administration building, providing expanded opportunities to prepare the healthcare workforce needed across the region.
“As we celebrate 90 years today, we also look forward to the next 90 years. Our mission remains clear. We will continue preparing skilled workers for our industries, supporting economic development, creating pathways to prosperity, and changing lives through education,” said Dr. Spillers.
The college extends special thanks to Senator Sam Jenkins and Representative Steven Jackson for including the NLTCC Shreveport Campus in the first phase of Act 35 funding. Their advocacy helped pave the way for this next chapter. The funding requires a local match, made possible through the generous support of alumni, community partners, businesses, and other donors who invested in Rebuild to Rise.
As NLTCC celebrates 90 years since its founding in Shreveport, Rebuild to Rise represents a commitment to preserving the college’s legacy while building upon it. Through continued investment in its campuses, programs, and students, NLTCC is preparing to meet the workforce needs of Northwest Louisiana for generations to come.
