Northwest Louisiana Technical Community College (NLTCC) Chancellor Dr. Jayda Spillers presented Plain Dealing High School senior Ja’Marion Baker-Shepard with a $1,000 scholarship and a welding helmet in support of his future educational goals.
Following Plain Dealing High School’s first football victory in 49 games, Ja’Marion shared in a post-game interview that he planned to pursue technical training in welding after graduation. His interview caught the attention of Dr. Spillers, who wanted to help him take the next step toward a high-demand, high-wage career.
During a special presentation at Town Hall, Dr. Spillers described the welding helmet as the next helmet Ja’Marion would carry, symbolizing his transition from the football field to the workforce.
Reflecting on the surprise, Ja’Marion expressed his gratitude. “This means a lot to me. This will actually help me get my future career started,” he shared. “I always wanted to be a welder.” He also revealed that he had been considering leaving the state, but the scholarship has inspired him to stay in Louisiana to pursue his goals.
According to the Louisiana Workforce Commission's 2024 Workforce Development Report, employment in welding-related occupations is projected to grow by nearly 10% statewide by 2032. By supporting students like Ja’Marion, NLTCC continues its commitment to preparing skilled workers and encouraging Louisiana's young talent to build their futures close to home.
NLTCC looks forward to supporting Ja’Marion as he pursues his education and congratulates the Plain Dealing High School Lions on their victory.
